President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has requested the Senate to confirm Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun as the substantive Chief Justice of Nigeria.
According to the Nation, the request was made in a letter read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during the Senate’s plenary session on Tuesday, September 24.
Justice Kekere-Ekun, who is currently serving as the Acting CJN, was nominated by the President following the recommendation of the National Judicial Council, in accordance with Section 231(1) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended). This section empowers the President to appoint the Chief Justice of Nigeria, subject to Senate confirmation.
In the letter, President Tinubu expressed hope for the Senate’s prompt consideration of the nomination. “I have the honour to forward the nomination of Honourable Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun CON for confirmation as CJN,” the letter read.
He added, “It is my hope that this request will receive the expeditious consideration and confirmation of the Senate.”
The President concluded the letter by extending his personal regards to the Senate President, noting his appreciation for their cooperation in the matter.
