The University of Lagos, has stated that the recent protest about the hike in tuition fee held outside the premises of the institution was not carried out by its students.
Recall that UNILAG recently reviewed its mandatory costs, which led to the National Association of Nigerian Students decision to protest the increase on Wednesday.
PUNCH METRO reported that security personnel stopped and tear-gassed some NANS members who attempted to protest outside the school’s gate on Wednesday morning.
According to a top principle officer who did not want his name publicised, the NANS members calling for the protest were no longer students of the university and so had no authority to call for a protest on behalf of UNILAG’s genuine students.
Noting that his records showed more than 75% of students had paid their fees, he claimed that the protest had not been initiated by UNILAG students.
“It is a calculated attempt, and from our records, over 75 per cent of our students have paid. These boys are opportunists our students are on holiday so there wasn’t any protest. They are just using UNILAG to gain clout. And we don’t have the highest fee, and we are not the only one charging fees.”
He stressed that the students of UNILAG were on break and hence not present on campus or at the gate to participate in the demonstration.
