The Nigerian U-17 women’s national football team, the Flamingos, triumphed with a decisive 4-1 win over Liberia in the first leg of the final qualifying round for the 2024 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
The match, held on Sunday evening at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Stadium, showcased the Flamingos’ superior performance under coach Bankole Olowookere.
Abidemi Moshood initiated the scoring spree in the 19th minute, setting a dominant tone for Nigeria.
Ten minutes later, Peace Effiong doubled the lead with a precise shot.
Harmony Chidi further compounded Liberia’s troubles by adding Nigeria’s third goal nine minutes before the break.
Substitute Blessing Ifitezue capped the victory with a fourth goal, 16 minutes before the final whistle.
Liberia managed a consolation goal from a penalty in the 87th minute, but it barely dented Nigeria’s commanding display.
The teams will face off again next weekend at the Moshood Abiola Stadium in Abuja for the second leg.
