A Ugandan Arsenal fan celebrating the team’s 2-0 victory over Manchester United has reportedly been shot dead by a security guard.
The incident occurred at a restaurant in Lukaya, a town about 100km (62 miles) from Kampala, Uganda’s capital. Another supporter was also injured in the shooting, which unfolded in the final moments of the match.
According to local journalist Farish Magembe, tensions flared when the restaurant’s manager became irritated by the noise from the jubilant crowd and directed the security guard to take action.
Despite warnings to lower their voices, the fans grew louder after the restaurant’s power was cut off, further escalating the situation.
Witnesses reported that the guard then opened fire, discharging multiple rounds.
The deceased has been identified as 30-year-old John Ssenyonga, who died instantly. Another long-time Arsenal supporter, Lawrence Mugejera, was wounded and rushed to the hospital for treatment.
Both the guard and the restaurant manager fled the scene and are currently being sought by authorities.
A gun was recovered from the site of the shooting, according to regional police spokesperson Twaha Kasirye, who was quoted in the Daily Monitor newspaper.
“We condemn the incident and we ask anyone with information that can help the police to bring the suspect to book to speak up,” Kasirye stated. He also urged fans to exercise restraint during celebrations.
Incidents of violence linked to English Premier League matches are not unusual in Uganda, where the league enjoys immense popularity.
In October, an Arsenal supporter reportedly stabbed a Manchester United fan following a heated argument over a game against Liverpool.
Earlier in January 2023, a youth councillor lost his life after being stabbed while trying to break up a fight after Arsenal’s loss to Manchester City. A week prior, another Arsenal fan was fatally beaten in Adjumani, West Nile district, following a match-related dispute.
