The UN General Assembly is set to hold a memorial service for Iran’s late President, Ebrahim Raisi, and his Foreign Minister, Hossein Amirabdollahian, who tragically died in helicopter crash on Sunday.
UN General Assembly, President Dennis Francis, announced the ceremony would take place on Thursday, May 30.
On Thursday, Francis visited the Islamic Republic’s mission in New York, where he signed a memorial book to honor the late Iranian leaders.
Welcomed by Amir Saeed Iravani, Iran’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Francis extended his sympathies to the Iranian government, its people, and the families of the victims.
The UN General Assembly had previously observed a minute of silence for those who died in the crash.
President Raisi was returning from a dam inauguration ceremony near Iran’s border with Azerbaijan when his helicopter crashed in Varzaqan, northwestern Iran.
The crash also claimed the lives of Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian and several senior provincial officials who were on board.
