The University of Nigeria Nsukka has confirmed the unfortunate passing of a first-year student whose body was discovered in a drainage on Friday, July 5.
The deceased, Favour Okenyi, a Medical Laboratory Science student, was found near Akanu Ibiam Stadium within the university premises.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria, the university’s Acting Public Relations Officer, Okwun Omeaku, confirmed the incident in a statement released on Sunday in Nsukka.
The statement noted the university community’s profound shock and sorrow over the tragic loss of the young student.
“The circumstances surrounding the death are currently under investigation that will aid investigations and fish out perpetrator/s of the evil act,“ said Omeaku.
The university expressed its condolences to Okenyi’s family and stated that it was working closely with security agencies and the family to uncover the details of her death and prevent similar occurrences in the future.
“The University Community was shocked on Friday, July 5, by the distressing discovery of a lifeless body found in a drainage near Akanu Ibiam Stadium, UNN.
“The University administration is deeply saddened by the loss of our student and extends heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased for the tragic death of such a promising young student.
“The management is collaborating with security agencies and the family of the deceased to uncover the circumstances surrounding her death and to prevent any potential recurrence of such incidents in the future,” the statement continued.
