The acting Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Adewale Adeniyi, has warned its officers to only use firearms in the case of self defense.
According to The PUNCH, he stated this in a statement on Thursday during the official declaration of a sensitisation workshop on the practical implementation of the Nigeria Customs Service Act 2023.
According to Adeniyi, the utilisation of firearms should be limited to exceptional situations necessitating self-defense.
He said, “We must not, in any circumstance, use firearms except we have an absolute necessity for using it. The citizens of this country are there for us to protect.”
In the meantime, the Senate has expressed its recommendation for the Federal Government to utilise the allocated sum of N14.2bn in the 2023 budget for the purpose of constructing the Nigerian Customs Academy in Bauchi State.
Additionally, the organisation required its Committee on Customs, Excise and Tariff, once established, to undertake thorough supervision of the development and finalisation of the proposed one-stop shop operating centre for the revenue-generating agency.
