Valencia continued its impressive form on Friday night with a 1-0 victory over Sevilla at Mestalla Stadium, extending its unbeaten streak to six matches and climbing above their Andalusian rivals into 12th place in the La Liga standings.
The decisive moment came in first-half stoppage time when Javier Guerra found the net, adding to the momentum Valencia had built following their stunning 2-1 triumph over Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu the previous weekend.
In front of a crowd of 46,000 home supporters, the match proved especially frustrating for Sevilla.
The visitors saw a goal ruled out and a penalty decision overturned by VAR during the first half, swinging the tide firmly in Valencia’s favour.
“It’s very easy to analyze the match,” Sevilla’s Norwegian goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland reflected. “The disallowed goal should have given us the chance to go one-nil up. Then the uncalled penalty ends with a goal in our box. They scored despite doing very little in the first half, with the only chance they had. We have to score as well, we had opportunities to do so in the first half.”
The defeat marked a fourth consecutive loss for Sevilla, who now trail Valencia by a single point.
