The controversial referee, Antonio Mateu Lahoz, has reportedly been asked to exit the ongoing World Cup following the Netherlands vs Argentina World Cup game that he officiated.
Lahoz, who umpired the game which was played on December 9, has come under fire for making dubious decisions during the game.
The Spanish referee handed out a total of 15 yellow cards during the game, which was constantly punctuated by rising flares from both teams.
Although, Argentina qualified for the semifinals, Lionel Messi was yet critical of him after the game during an interview, as reported by Daily Mail.
He said, “I don’t want to speak about referees because after they will sanction you. But people saw what happened.
“I think FIFA must take care of this, it cannot put a referee like that for a match of such magnitude, of such importance. The referee cannot fail to be up to the task.”
It was gathered that, following Messi’s remark during the interview, Lahoz has been sent home and won’t take part in the remaining four games in any capacity.
