Super Eagles head coach, Finidi George, has lamented the missed opportunities that led to a 1-1 draw with South Africa in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, on Friday night.
He emphasized that his team must move past Friday’s disappointing result against the Bafana Bafana in their third match of the qualifiers and focus on their upcoming game against Benin Republic.
South Africa took the lead in the first half through Thembo Zwane. However, Hatayspor midfielder Fisayo Dele-Bashiru leveled the score for the Super Eagles shortly after halftime.
The three-time African champions have now recorded their third consecutive draw in the qualifiers and currently sit fifth in Group C.
Finidi expressed his frustration with the team’s performance, particularly their sluggish start.
“We started sloppily in the first half, we took over the game immediately, we scored in the second half,” Finidi told reporters after the game.
“We missed chances, overall it was not a bad second half for us. The players reacted well in the second half, but it was not the best result we wanted, we have to get our heads up and work for the next game (Benin Republic). I am not happy about the point.”
The Super Eagles are set to face Benin Republic at the Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium in Abidjan on Monday.
