Rangers International FC of Enugu who were newly crowned champions of the 2023/2024 Nigeria Professional Football League, have set their sights on the Confederation of African Football, Champions League, slated to commence in August this year.
Speaking to the press ahead of the trophy presentation to their supporters in Enugu, the club’s General Manager, Barr. Amobi Ezeaku, expressed Rangers’ unwavering commitment to representing Nigeria in the prestigious continental tournament.
Ezeaku acknowledged the stiff competition that lies ahead but assured fans of the club’s readiness to face the challenge head-on.
To strengthen their squad for the demanding competition, Rangers have scouted seasoned players from across the continent.
Ezeaku praised the State Governor, Peter Mbah and the state ministry of sports for their support during the last season and also thanked their shirt sponsors, Afrinvest, for their efforts in enhancing the team’s performance, especially in away games.
The victory in the NPFL season has highlighted the need for the club to focus on overall development, particularly in improving facilities.
Ezeaku emphasized the club’s determination not just to participate but to compete favorably in the CAF Champions League.
“What our victory means is that we must look at the development of the facilities.
“We’ve gone round Africa to scout for players that will fit into era we’re entering now, which is the CAF Champions League. We’re going to do our best to make us proud on the African continent
“We’re not just going to participate but compete favourably because we now have the means and the support base to do that.
“We believe that that the kind of coaches we have, we will rule Africa”, Ezeaku said
The Group Managing Director of Afrinvest, Dr Ike Chioke, commended Rangers for their victory, stating that sponsoring and supporting the club has been a beneficial partnership.
He noted that their association with Rangers has enhanced their reputation as a trusted corporate entity globally.
Hon. Commissioner for Youths and Sports Development, Barr. Lloyd Ekweremadu, expressed gratitude for Governor Peter Mbah’s support, which played a significant role in Rangers’ victory.
He assured that the state government would upgrade the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium to meet international standards before the CAF competition kicks off.
Additionally, Ekweremadu revealed plans by the state government to construct stadiums across all senatorial districts to promote sports development.
