Barcelona President, Joan Laporta, has announced that the club will continue to pay Lionel Messi’s outstanding wage bill until 2025.
Despite the Argentine superstar’s departure from Barcelona in 2021 to join Paris Saint-Germain, Laporta has confirmed that the club remains committed to fulfilling their financial obligations to Messi.
Having made his Barcelona debut in 2004, Messi went on to amass an extraordinary record of 778 appearances and 672 goals for the Catalan club, solidifying his position as one of the greatest players in the history of the sport.
However, negotiations for a new contract in 2021 were hindered by Barcelona’s financial troubles, resulting in Messi’s departure.
Addressing the ongoing financial arrangement, Laporta explained, “We have outstanding payments to Messi until 2025. What is owed to him is the deferral of the wage bill that was agreed with the previous board, and that produces outstanding payments that end in 2025. He is paid religiously.”
During his tenure at Barcelona, Messi secured an impressive collection of silverware, including four UEFA Champions League titles, ten LaLiga championships, and seven Copa Del Rey triumphs.
His move to Paris Saint-Germain saw him contribute 32 goals in 75 games while clinching two Ligue 1 titles.
Recent reports suggested that Messi had received an astonishing offer of €400 million (£345 million) per season from Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal.
However, the 36-year-old forward has decided to reject this lucrative proposal and is now poised to join Inter Miami, a Major League Soccer team based in the United States.
