Brazilian and Real Madrid legend, Ronaldo Nazario, has voiced his support for Vinicius Junior to win the prestigious 2024 Ballon d’Or, citing the young winger’s stellar performances throughout the season as the primary reason.
Several top players, including Nigeria’s Ademola Lookman, Manchester City’s Rodri, and Vinicius Junior, have been nominated for the award, but Ronaldo is confident that Vinicius stands out above the rest.
Vinicius was a key figure in Real Madrid’s success during the 2023-24 campaign, registering 24 goals and 11 assists in 39 appearances across all competitions.
His contributions were crucial in helping the club secure both La Liga and the UEFA Champions League titles.
In an interview with ESPN, Ronaldo expressed his strong belief that Vinicius’ standout season makes him a deserving candidate for football’s most prestigious individual prize.
“I think Viní already deserves it [the Ballon d’Or],” Ronaldo said. “He’s had a spectacular Champions League, a spectacular La Liga, and he’s been evolving more and more.”
Ronaldo, who has maintained a close relationship with Vinicius since his arrival at Real Madrid, recalled his first interactions with the rising star.
“I remember that I did his presentation the day he arrived at Real Madrid and I got on well with him. I talk to Viní a lot about football and certain details, and looking at everything that’s happened, it’s a fantastic development that he’s making,” Ronaldo explained.
Ronaldo went on to emphasize just how pivotal Vinicius has been to Real Madrid this season, he noted, “I think his time has come. He’s been extremely decisive this year for Real Madrid. For me, today he’s the best player in the world by far.”
Despite Ronaldo’s praise, Vinicius will face strong competition for the Ballon d’Or, with contenders such as Jude Bellingham, who had a breakout season for Real Madrid, and Spain’s Rodri, whose influence in Manchester City’s treble-winning campaign cannot be overlooked.
Nevertheless, Ronaldo remains convinced that Vinicius’ incredible form sets him apart in the race for the prestigious award.
