Several communities in Calabar, the capital city of Cross River State, are currently experiencing power outages following the destruction of multiple electricity poles by a severe windstorm.
This disruption has left many residents in the affected areas without power for an extended period.
In a public statement released on Sunday, the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company informed its customers in Calabar that the ongoing outage was caused by the damage to power infrastructure caused by the windstorm.
“We wish to inform our esteemed customers in Calabar that the outage currently experienced is a result of a heavy wind storm that damaged many poles in our network,” the PHED explained.
The windstorm has particularly impacted several key locations across the city, including the University of Calabar, Federal Housing Estate, Transcorp, EPZ Complex, and numerous other areas.
These neighborhoods, along with others affected, are now grappling with an absence of power, severely disrupting daily life.
The PHED has assured residents that the issue is being treated as a priority. In their statement, the company emphasized the efforts of their technical team, who are working diligently to restore electricity as quickly as possible.
“Affected feeders include Bao Yao Iron and Steel, OLAM, Niger Mill, EPZ Complex, MCC, Federal Housing, 8 Miles, Unical, Amika, Transcorp, EPZ 1, Essien Town, Leopard, and Diamond,” the statement continued.
The company has also appealed for understanding and patience during this challenging period, recognizing the inconvenience caused by the prolonged outage, stating, “We assure our customers that this situation is being given the very urgent attention that it deserves, as our technical team is working assiduously to ensure that supply is restored as soon as possible. We appeal for patience and understanding during this time.”
This incident comes at a particularly difficult time for Nigerians, as the country continues to struggle with frequent grid collapses and power shortages.
The damage caused by the windstorm has only intensified the ongoing power supply challenges faced by residents across Calabar and the larger region, leaving many in dire need of electricity restoration.
