The National Emergency Management Agency has reported that windstorms have damaged over 9,733 houses in Adamawa State in 2024.
According to The PUNCH, NEMA’s Head of Operations in Adamawa, Mr. Ladan Ayuba, shared this information during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Yola on Saturday.
Following assessments in the impacted Local Government Areas—Jada, Hong, Mayo-Belwa, Madagali, and Fufore—Ayuba advised residents living in flood-prone regions to move to safer or higher ground.
This warning is in response to predictions by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, which listed Adamawa among the states likely to experience flooding in 2024.
Potentially affected areas include Fufore, Yola-North, Yola-South, Girei, Numan, Lamurde, and Gombi LGAs. Ayuba emphasized, “For your safety, please avoid flood-prone areas, stay on higher ground and stop dumping refuse in waterways.”
He also urged residents to develop the habit of listening to the radio for important updates and to adhere to NEMA’s guidelines.
“You should also not drink or wash clothes with flood water to avoid a cholera outbreak,” he cautioned.
Ayuba advised that people should only return to their homes when authorities declare it safe, noting the ongoing flooding due to water release from the Lagdo Dam in the Republic of Cameroon.
He added that NEMA is conducting sensitization campaigns and called on traditional leaders to help disseminate the message to those without media access.
