Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has called for increased commitment to maternal and newborn health, describing it as a vital pillar for sustainable development.
In a statement released on Monday by her media aide, Busola Kukoyi, Mrs Tinubu marked the 2025 World Health Day with a passionate appeal to governments, health institutions, and stakeholders to prioritize the wellbeing of mothers and their babies.
“As we observe this year’s World Health Day under the theme ‘Healthy Beginnings, Hopeful Futures,’ we are reminded that ensuring the health of mothers and newborns is both a moral imperative and a foundation for national progress,” she said.
The First Lady expressed concern over the high number of preventable deaths that still occur during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postnatal period, stressing that no woman should have to face such risks while bringing life into the world.
“Every single day, we lose too many women and babies to complications that could have been avoided with timely access to quality care. It is unacceptable that in this day and age, childbirth remains a life-threatening experience for many,” she added.
Senator Tinubu also used the occasion to commend health workers across Nigeria for their dedication and resilience, especially in underserved communities.
“I salute our health workers who continue to make sacrifices in the face of numerous challenges. Your commitment is the heartbeat of our healthcare system,” she noted.
Concluding her message, the First Lady urged collective action to build a society where safe childbirth and healthy childhoods are the norm, not the exception.
“Let us all work together to ensure a future where every mother can deliver safely and every child has the opportunity to thrive,” she said.
