Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Yobe State Command, have arrested 141 suspected drug traffickers in the state.
The NDLEA State Commander, Abdulazeez Ogungboye made this known while parading the suspects in Damaturu
The suspects were said to consist of 138 males and three females, were arrested across the 17 local government areas of the state between July 2022 and June 2023.
Ogungboye said about 304.5kgs of Cannabis Sativa and 125.5kgs of psychotropic substances were recovered from the suspects, while 427.95kgs of tramadol, codeine-based cough syrup, and diazepam injections were seized, last year, in the state.
“The Agency has also secured 27 convictions while 75 cases of drug trafficking and abuse are at various stages of trial in courts”, he added.
The Commander stressed that the anti-narcotic agency remains committed to combating the menace of illicit drug trafficking and abuse in the state.
The wife of the Yobe State governor Hajiya Hafsat Mai Mala Buni has, however, rehabilitated and empowered 30 drug addicts in the state recently.
Those rehabilitated are said to include: 10 females and 20 Males drawn from the 17 local government areas of the state.
At the event held at NUJ Secretariat in Damaturu, Mrs. Buni explained that the empowerment program is part of the effort to keep the rehabilitated addicts off drug abuse and to become self-reliant towards the development of the state.
“The initiative targets about 30 participants and we are hoping to do more”, she assured.
She then called on the beneficiaries to judiciously utilize what they have been given to develop themselves.
