Harry Kane netted his 23rd Bundesliga goal of the season as Bayern Munich claimed a 3-1 victory over Augsburg, moving nine points clear of Bayer Leverkusen ahead of their game against Heidenheim on Sunday.
The English striker was on target in the 60th minute, heading in a superb delivery from Michael Olise to hand the Bavarians the lead on a night that had threatened to be a tricky one for the league leaders.
Augsburg had stunned Bayern by opening the scoring in the 30th minute, taking advantage of a quick free-kick.
Dimitri Giannoulis made no mistake, chesting the ball into position before lashing it into the top corner.
Jamal Musiala equalized just before the break, finishing off a fine move that saw Leroy Sane beat his marker and whip in a low cross.
However, the turning point came shortly before Kane’s goal, when Cedric Zesiger received his second booking for a foul on the England captain.
Kane capitalized moments later with his decisive header, and Bayern remained in control for the rest of the match. Sane capped off the evening with a clinical strike deep into stoppage time to seal all three points.
Kane’s goal also marked a milestone for Michael Olise, the former Crystal Palace man. His assist was his 10th of the Bundesliga campaign—more than any other player this season. Olise also rattled the crossbar during another standout performance.
THE MVP
Kane was undoubtedly the star of the show. He not only won the foul that led to Zesiger’s red card but also broke the deadlock moments later.
From that moment, Bayern never looked back. Kane was instrumental in dictating the tempo in the closing stages, showcasing his technical quality with smart passes and hold-up play.
THE BIG LOSER
Jamal Musiala, despite scoring the equalizer, had a concerning end to his night. The young midfielder went down clutching his hamstring after trying to block a clearance and was helped off the pitch by physios.
With key fixtures against Inter Milan in the Champions League and a Der Klassiker clash with Dortmund on the horizon, Bayern will be sweating over his fitness.
Bayern now shift focus to their Champions League quarter-final first leg against Inter Milan in four days. Augsburg, meanwhile, will look to bounce back when they visit Bochum next Saturday.
