The Delta State Commissioner of Police, Olufemi Abaniwonda, has initiated a comprehensive investigation into the tragic death of 24-year-old aspiring artist, Paul Obukohwo.
This directive was disclosed in a statement on Sunday by the State Police Command Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, who encouraged the late artist’s family to visit the police headquarters to formally commence the investigation.
Obukohwo reportedly died after being subjected to torture while in the custody of the Rapid Response Squad.
Extending his condolences to the grieving family, Abaniwonda reassured them that any officer found responsible would be held accountable under the law.
Providing details of the incident, the police statement indicated that the events unfolded on March 26, 2025, at approximately 3:45 p.m. when RRS personnel conducted a raid at a notorious black spot along Okpanam Road.
During the operation, 24-year-old Prosper Odili was apprehended for allegedly wearing military camouflage, while several others managed to escape.
The statement further noted, “The deceased who obstructed the police from arresting his brother and damaged the patrol vehicle in the process, was later arrested.”
While in detention, Obukohwo reportedly fell ill and was taken to the Police Hospital in Asaba, where he was diagnosed with hypoglycemia (low blood sugar).
“Due to the severity of his condition, he was referred to Asaba Specialist Hospital and later referred to Federal Medical Centre Asaba, where he died while receiving treatment,” the statement read.
Edafe acknowledged growing concerns on social media and complaints from the deceased’s brother, who alleged that Obukohwo was subjected to police brutality while in custody.
