King Charles III required a short hospital observation on Thursday after experiencing temporary side effects from his scheduled cancer treatment earlier in the day, Buckingham Palace confirmed.
The 76-year-old monarch has since returned to Clarence House, where he continues his recovery.
On medical advice, the King has canceled his planned engagements for Friday, which included four public appearances in Birmingham.
Additionally, he had been scheduled to receive credentials from three ambassadors on Thursday.
“His Majesty would like to send his apologies to all those who may be inconvenienced or disappointed as a result,” the palace statement read.
A spokesperson further assured that Charles hopes to reschedule the engagements in due course, acknowledging the efforts made in preparation for his visit.
A royal insider described the hospitalization as a minor setback in an otherwise positive recovery journey, emphasizing that his treatment remains on track.
The late-night palace announcement was made after the King consulted with his staff and doctors upon returning home.
Despite the brief hospital stay, Charles remained engaged in his royal duties, continuing to handle state affairs and make phone calls from his study, a royal source told CNN.
Queen Camilla did not accompany the King to the London Clinic, the same hospital where he underwent a procedure for an enlarged prostate in January 2024.
The King publicly shared his cancer diagnosis the following month, stepping back from public engagements during the initial phase of treatment before resuming them in April. His first official outing post-diagnosis was a visit to a cancer treatment center, where he personally connected with patients and medical staff, drawing from his own experience.
Expressions of support have poured in for the monarch since his diagnosis, with thousands sending well wishes.
Reflecting on this overwhelming response, Charles previously stated, “Such kind thoughts are the greatest comfort and encouragement,” adding that they had moved him to tears.
The King’s schedule continues to be carefully managed in consultation with his medical team to prioritize his recovery.
Despite his illness, he has found fulfillment in carrying out state duties and public appearances, which have reportedly boosted his well-being. Following his recent trip to Australia and Samoa, palace officials noted the visit significantly uplifted his spirits and aided his recovery.
Looking ahead, Charles and Queen Camilla are still expected to proceed with their state visit to Italy in April. However, their planned trip to the Vatican has been postponed due to Pope Francis’ ongoing recovery from double pneumonia.
Meanwhile, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer extended his best wishes to the King following the news of his hospital visit.
Earlier this week, Charles hosted a reception at Buckingham Palace for regional media and presided over an investiture at Windsor Castle.
Last week, he also embarked on a three-day visit to Northern Ireland, continuing his royal duties despite his ongoing treatment.
