The Resident Electoral Commissioner for Ogun State, Barrister Niyi Ijalaye, has reportedly passed away after collapsing in Abuja on Monday evening.
According to the Nation, his death occurred shortly after attending a meeting of Resident Electoral Commissioners at the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission.
While the exact cause of his death remains unclear, it has been confirmed that Barrister Ijalaye was in good spirits throughout the day. He was last seen returning to his hotel room after the meeting, where the tragic incident took place.
INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, had earlier remarked on the focus of the meeting, which centered on the upcoming off-cycle governorship elections in Edo and Ondo States, as well as the filling of seven vacant positions in the National and State Assemblies. These remarks were shared on the commission’s official Facebook page.
A photo of Barrister Ijalaye, dressed in a blue striped kaftan with a red cap, was among those posted by the commission, showing him actively participating in the meeting.
Barrister Ijalaye, who was from Ondo State, was appointed as the REC for Ogun State in March 2022, succeeding Olusegun Agbaje, who was transferred to Lagos State.
